Merry Christmas

Picture taken in front of the fireplace in the Family Living Center

 December 20, 2020

My dear family and friends,

This week has been so much fun! Besides the usual service we do each day in the welding and auto mechanic shop, this week, we have been able to work with the Young Sister Missionaries! What a blast that has been for us! Up to this point, we really haven't had the opportunity to do much with them other than a quick "hello" as we pass each other (again - thanks Covid).  For Christmas this week, we (the missionaries) are getting to go on a wagon ride through Nauvoo (in small groups, socially distanced and with masks on for those who are worried) and have entertainment at pre-arranged locations.  The night us "oldies" go, the YSMs are performing for us and then when they go, us "oldies" are performing for them. We are all excited for this and it has been a great moral booster! After a Thanksgiving "lockdown", we are so excited for this!

So, Elder Burns and I have been organizing the YSM entertainment. We have been able to meet with the YSMs and preview their talents - songs, story-telling, skits, etc. It's been so much fun! These young sisters really are valiant servants, saved for these last days and they are so talented and willing to share those talents! It has been a JOY for us to be with them!

Speaking of JOY - I heard a great acronym the other day for it!
J - Jesus
O - Others
Y - Yourself

If we remember this acronym - keep Jesus first in our lives, then others and then yourself. That's where true joy is found. Now, I'm not saying that we don't take time for ourselves because it is very important that we do that - we must fill our cups so that we have enough to give others. I know for me that I am happiest when I feel needed and am serving others.

This week, we also took a lot of food to the food bank and items to the Bright Angel drop. It was so nice to see how generous our missionaries are. I love it and I love being a part of such great work!

Last night we were able to go to some of the historic sites and it was so wonderful to be able to enter them. It was the first time since we've been here. They are decorated for Christmas and have some super cool nutcrackers. Elder Burns and I have a large collection of nutcrackers but I'd never seen any like I saw last night! I'll put pictures on the blog.

Along with celebrating Christmas this week, we also celebrate the birth of Joseph Smith on December 23. I am so grateful that Joseph, as a young boy of 14, had the faith to seek answers in prayer. I'm thankful that he had the courage, strength and integrity to carry on the work that he was assigned to do. I love him and am so humbled that I get to daily walk the streets here in Nauvoo that he walked and that my ancestors walked.

As Elder Burns and I were in the Post Office historic site yesterday, the thought again came to me that Joseph walked on those floors, as did many of my ancestors. I know that this church, the restored church of Jesus Christ, was restored through Joseph Smith. I know that he translated The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Christ. I know that I take a lot of this for granted but I rejoice this holiday season to remember these two great men, my Savior, Jesus Christ and his prophet in the latter-days, Joseph Smith. If you are interested in reading about Christmas with the prophet Joseph, here is a link to a great article:

I wish you all a wonderful and very merry Christmas! May you rejoice in Christ, who I know came to this Earth as a small babe in a manager, who was welcomed to the earth by shepherds. He lived a humble life but was a perfect example for us to follow. He died so that we might live again! I am forever grateful to Him for his sacrifice for me. I know I fall short but that he makes up the difference for me as I repent and try harder to be better each day!

Much love to all of you!

Sister Burns

I'll be posting a lot of pictures on this week's blog. I can't attach very many to the email or it won't send. You can find the blog at burnsinnauvoo.blogspot.com

I love this lock that is on one of the historic sites.
I just can't remember which one!

A beautiful sunrise in Nauvoo! This makes having to get up early so worth it!

The First Vision statue in the Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is having a makeover.
Everything is in the process of being removed.
I'm excited to see the new and improved VC when it is all complete.

This was one of my cleaning and organizing activities this week!
The before πŸ ‰and afterπŸ ‹!

This gentleman has been going  all over Nauvoo singing Christmas carols.
We had a knock on the door and he was singing for us! It was so much fun!

Pictures from inside the 70's Hall. I forgot to get one of the outside.

I don't usually see the sunsets but was in the right spot on this day!

This picture sums up beautifully what I believe!
The Savior came to us as a small babe, set the perfect example for us to live by.
He died and was resurrected so that we can live again. Through Him
and the covenants that I have made with Him in His beautiful temples,
I can live with Him again and be with my family forever!
That knowledge makes everything worth it!

Some fun nutcrackers that are in some of the historic sites this Christmas.

Our three Christmas trees! This one we brought from home. My mom and dad bought it on their mission so we thought it only right to bring it on our mission.

Little did we know that we would have a tree and decorations waiting for us when we arrived to our condo in Nauvoo, so we decided that we would have two trees!

Then we received a package from our kids and grandkids that was full of nutcracker ornaments that they had made and painted for us. We didn't have room for them on the other tree so we headed to Dollar General and bought this tree - and it was even 50% off! We have also added a lot of new ornaments to it that we have received from the other missionaries here! The ornaments on this tree will definitely be treasured!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

December 13, 2020

This week flew by! I can't believe that we have already been here for two months.  This was Sister Allen's last week serving with me. She and Elder Allen leave on Wednesday to start their return trip home. We will also lose another great couple this week, Elder and Sister Stapley. Like I've said earlier, and I'll probably say again - saying "Good-bye" is one of the hardest parts of the mission.

Elder Burns and I have been busy and we love it that way! As I mentioned in an earlier letter, we were called to be the chairmen of the Outreach Program for the missionaries in the Nauvoo Historic Sites Mission. We have been busy doing a food drive and helping with Bright Angel helper, which is like the Angel Trees we have in Utah. We have a great group of missionaries who are making our part easy!

We have also been asked to organize musical/entertainment numbers with the YSMs (Young Sister Missionaries). It has been so much fun to work with them, even if it's mostly been over text and voicemail because they are busy! They are so willing to help though and I am looking forward to seeing it all come together.

I am also doing the 12 Days of Christmas for two of the YSMs that I have been assigned to watch and minister to. It's been a blast pulling that all together and I'm excited for the next 12 days!

We had some beautiful weather this week so Elder Burns and I took advantage and took one last bike ride before the winter sets in. I love being outdoors (when it's not freezing cold!) so it was a real treat!

Each week, we are fortunate to have a missionary training with our President. He is an inspired man and we look forward to these meetings. The last four weeks we have studied faith and I have learned so much. I'm learning that I have a lot still to learn but I am grateful for the faith that I have in my Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ.  I have peace knowing that they love me and that they are always there for me. I know that there are times that my Savior has carried my burdens through the hard times in life. I have felt that burden lifted many times and I can't deny that I know He lives and is there for us.  I also know that He makes up the difference when we do all that we can. I love my Savior and I love this time of year when we put extra emphasis on His birth and life. He is my light, my strength and my hope.

Two reminders:
1) #LightTheWorld by visiting lighttheworld.org
2) See Nauvoo in all her Christmas glory by taking a virtual live tour of the historic sites! They all are decked out in Christmas decor and are beautiful to see. πŸŽ„Visit nauvoohistoricsites.org/live to schedule your tour. Small and large groups can participate. I had the idea today that it would be a fun evening with your family to tour the Scovil Bakery and then make Gingerbread cookies together after the tour. If you can't find the recipe online, let me know and I'll get it for you! They are so good - you'll thank me later!

I pray that we will all find peace and happiness during this Christmas Season and into the new year!

I love you!

We need to learn how to take better selflies! πŸ˜‚ This was a beautiful day for December! We took our last bike ride and then put the bikes into storage for the winter. This was taken on the walk home. It's always a great walk when we can see the temple!

We are in and out of these doors multiple times a day! I can actually say now that I'm excited to walk through these doors and see what I can accomplish during the day!

Can anyone else see the face in this one or is it just me? I've got to make it fun, right?

My beautiful temple on the hill. I long for the time that I can actually enter it again.

Elder Burns after a fun day of repairing things.
I can't remember what he repaired this day but it left it's mark all over his face! πŸ˜‚

This is the before...

More of the before...
And
the after!!!!

God painted a beautiful sunrise this morning!

WOW...WOW...WOW...

December 6, 2020

Hello all!

Do you like my subject heading? Those words made me feel really good this week! The admins of the FM Department came over to do an inspection of the Auto Mechanic shop and when they saw what Sister Allen and I have accomplished, Jordan just shook his head and kept saying, "Wow...Wow...Wow" over and over again. Jokingly, I told him I didn't think that was enough Wows and that he should give me a few more - which he did! He came over the next day for some training on a new key machine that was recently installed and again, he was amazed at what we've accomplished and I received some more "wows". It's been hard, frustrating work (frustrating because I don't know one part from another) but it's been rewarding to see the shop start to come together and I'm learning a lot!

This week Elder Burns, Sister Allen and I also made a trip to Burlington to pick up some new trucks and then a trip to Quincy with Elder and Sister Allen to take those trucks to have some things added to them. They were unexpected trips for me but were a nice break and I was also able to get to know Sister Allen better. I'm sure going to miss them when they leave.

Elder Burns has been busy making signs, latches and all kinds of fun things. He's loving being in the welding shop.

After last week, I decided that I needed a shift in thinking. So now, instead of "going to work" each day, I'm "heading to do my service". It's made such a difference in how I approach things. I've really tried to use the attitude of "What if I'm thankful for EVERYTHING!" and it's made a difference. I've still had some ups and downs but over-all, things are so much better! Attitude does make a difference!

We had a package from our children and grandchildren arrive in the mail this week! It was full of nutcracker ornaments that they had made! It was so fun to see how they were painted. We bought a tree and added them all to it! What a great gift that we'll treasure always! So, now we have three trees and I LOVE IT!

Elder Burns and I met this week with the others on the "Light the World" Committee to find ways we can provide service to Nauvoo and Carthage. We will be helping fill the food pantries and helping with the Angel Tree project here in Nauvoo. We are excited to serve those in these areas that we hold so dear! Make sure you visit lighttheworld.org for ideas on how you can #LightTheWorld for others this Christmas season.

The weather has been frigid in the mornings but so nice in the afternoons. We took a walk and it was so, so nice to be outdoors again. I miss my daily morning walks! It's hard to do it in the afternoons because we're tired! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜΄

I am so thankful for this Christmas season and the extra focus that is put on our Savior. I am grateful for the love that He shows me, that He came down to earth as a small infant, born in the humblest of places. That He lived and died and lives again! As Elder Burns and I sang the song, "I Stand All Amazed" earlier today, as we prepared to take the Sacrament to remember Him and to renew sacred covenants and promises that we have made, I felt so strongly of His spirit and it witnessed again to me that Jesus does love each of us. For those who do not know of this hymn, here are the words:

 1. I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me,
Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me.
I tremble to know that for me he was crucified,
That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died.

[Chorus] Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me
Enough to die for me!
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!

 2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine,
That he should extend his great love unto such as I,
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.

 3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat,
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet.

I am thankful that I get to serve in this wonderful place called Nauvoo! I am thankful for my ancestors who walked these streets and sacrificed so much so that I can have the gospel in my life today. I'm one lucky girl!

Remember to sign up for virtual live tours at nauvoohistoricsites.org/live/ The sites are all decorated for Christmas and are beautiful - from what I hear. I still haven't seen them.

 Love you!

Just a few of the many pictures that I took at Rand Park

Sister Allen and I had been cleaning and sorting
when we came across these.
We might have laughed - a lot - at these.
Are we the only ones that see the funny faces in them?
